Urban Ag Policy (Written for April 24 Hearing, no vote was taken)

Members of the La Lucha Space community as well as those involved with the Urban Farm Project have been among the participants, over the last several months, in a democratic process of drafting an Urban Agriculture Policy for the City of Conway.  This policy is an amendment to the Conway Zoning Ordinance that would clarify some language, legalize some simple and obviously normal activities that are currently technically illegal, and open up the possibility of legal sale of produce by individuals from their homes.

The overall change is very minor, however there is significant potential for these small changes to have a large impact in our community with the hard work of local residents.  This an opportunity for the city of Conway to encourage and support groups already hard at work to improve community, health, and food security in Conway.  This policy also provides citizens with basic rights of economic self determination.

The policy is in the City Council Agenda for Tuesday.

Write city council to support the policy.  You can contact all aldermen by writing to: citycouncil@cityofconway.org

AND come to the public hearing on April 24th at 6:30 PM @ the District Court Building

(also please read the rest of this article to be informed about what this writer thinks the policy rocks.)

Jamaican Sweet Potato Curry

Ingredients:

Sweet potatoes (I used about 8)

onions, garlic, ginger, olive oil, clove powder, cardamon powder, cinnamon, cayenne cumin, coriander, tomato sauce (or paste or cubes)

1 can coconut milk

2 cps. water

peas or sugar snaps

One of the hardest parts of cooking is coming up with what to cook. The seasons help you with variety, but after a while you have to get creative, bug others about what they feel like eating, or look around in blogs. Sometimes we pick a country or region and narrow the searches. This recipe is heavy on the spices, an olifactory experience!

Sautee the onions, ginger and garlic, add 1-2in. cubes of sweet potato (peeled of course), stir fry for 5 min. Add all the powders and stir, open your can of coconut milk, throw it in with the water. Stir again, add salt and a bay leaf. Bring to a boil, cover and lower heat to simmer for 20 min. Puree 1/2 to 2/3 depends of your taste of the mixture, careful not to burn yourself with the top of the food processor. Stir it back in and add your peas. I forgot to peeel mine in advance so they didn't quite cook all the way, a bit of a crunch never hurt anyone. Serve on top of rice.

Dream Act Panel - Wednesday, April 25 at 7pm

“The Dream Act: A Panel on Immigration and Education” will be held on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the UCA College of Business Lecture Hall. For more information check out the Facebook Event

Equal rights for every man, woman and child regardless of sex, race, religion AND place of birth--Why do we have to keep qualifying what ALL people means? A person cannot control where they are born and raised, we all share this life of complicated stories. We are pleased to share a piece written by our very own resident artist Hector Garcia (published Vortex Issue XXXV) Food for thought.

The DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act is a bill before the U.S. Senate that would help young immigrants gain legal permanent residency through college education or military service. The panel will debate the issues surrounding the bill (as well as Arkansas’s own version of the bill) in order to raise awareness about current issues in immigration and education.

New Urban Farm Project Logo!

Time to give some credit out for the new FC Urban Farm Project logo...

First off we should thank Hector Garcia, the current La Lucha Space 'live-in', for this excellent drawing.  Isn't that a good looking pea pod?  You can also check out his work on the main space wall at La Lucha Space right now.

The fonts! We owe some attribution to catastacharisma on a great site I found called FontStruct which has many fonts with Creative Commons licenses.  Pretty sweet - thanks Catastacharisma!

The other font, also from FontStruct, is by grafixon and is his first creation with FontStruct - it is excellent.  Our compliments!

We would be remiss if we didn't also thank the Penny Pincher on Van Ronkle for all their help getting stuff printed.

You can find members of the community sporting sweet new signs at UCA Green Week next week.  Go see what they've got going!
